Gi

Gi Jiu Jitsu is most identifiable by the clothing worn – a kimono, pants, and a belt. But this clothing is about more than looks. It actually changes the way the martial art is practiced! In Gi Jiu Jitsu you can grab your opponent’s clothes during grappling, which contributes to a slower pace that leaves you with more time to think through your next move.

No Gi

When practicing No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, you’ll shed your thick Gi and pants for stretchy athletic wear, such as shorts and a rash guard. Without the lapel and collar of a Gi to grab hold of, No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is much faster and requires quick thinking. While it’s up for you to decide, many feel that No-Gi BJJ is better when it comes to preparing for real-life altercations.

Made for Real Life

While many other martial art disciplines are striking arts (like Karate and Tae Kwon Do), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art. At first glance, this doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. But in practice, it changes everything.
In real life, most fights end up on the ground. This means that all of those kicks and punches you mastered may not be as helpful as you’d hoped. Meanwhile, BJJ is all about ground work. Instead of relying on strikes, BJJ primarily utilizes submission holds, chokes, take-downs, counters, and finishing techniques. After all, once a fight is moved to the ground, it’s much easier to gain control over your opponent.

Ends Fights Quickly

In BJJ, there’s no B.S. The goal of all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu altercations is to end the fight as quickly and efficiently as possible. So how is it done?
BJJ pairs intense moves with pushing, pulling, and pinning techniques – creating a fight that will take your attacker by surprise. Oh, and BJJ’s submission methods are no joke. They include the arm lock, triangle choke, heel hook, bow and arrow choke, elbow lock, and neck crank. These are to be used as soon as you’re able to bring your attacker to the ground, quickly subduing them and allowing you to escape. In addition, BJJ often allows for a non-violent submission, if that is what the situation calls for.

Doesn’t Rely Solely on Strength

While self-defense is an important skill for people of all ages and backgrounds, women and children are unfortunately much more likely to need to utilize it. Luckily, BJJ was created with this reality in mind.

BJJ is extremely unique because it allows a smaller individual to overcome a larger individual, and places its emphasis on technique rather than athleticism. While the striking arts rely on strength and power, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu doesn’t. Instead, BJJ is all about leverage and timing.

Everyone trains in the martial arts for different reasons. For some it may be to get in shape, while for others it may be to compete. But if your primary objective is to learn self-defense, BJJ trumps every other martial art discipline. Join us today and equip yourself with life-saving knowledge, experience, and confidence.
